6-year-old boy dies in accidental shooting

AKIAK -- A 6-year-old boy was shot and killed by a 7-year-old in the Western Alaska
village of Akiak on Sunday evening, Alaska State Troopers reported.
The boys were in an abandoned house and found a high-powered rifle, a Remington
700, troopers said.
The 7-year-old picked up the gun and there was "a negligent discharge," troopers
said.
Troopers in Bethel were notified of the fatal shooting at 8:18 p.m. It happened
shortly before that.
Troopers have not publicly identified the boys. The shooting isn't considered criminal
and alcohol wasn't a factor, according to troopers.
The investigation is continuing.

AKIAK -- Alaska State Troopers on Tuesday identified the 6-year-old boy who was
shot and killed by a playmate this weekend.
Dennis Dale Lamont was killed Sunday evening after he and an unnamed 7-year-old
went into an abandoned house in the Western Alaska village and came across a high-powered
Remington 700 rifle, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said.
A "negligent discharge" took place when the older boy picked up the weapon, said
troopers, who learned of the shooting at about 8:20 p.m. Troopers are not expecting
to file charges, Peters said.
